The British School Al Khubairat Phase 4 development programme began on 1 July 2010, and is now nearing completion. The first stage of the project will be completed by July 2012. Work on the second and final stage of the development project will begin over the summer, ready for completion during the first term of 2012/13.
The building is the fourth phase in The British School’s development programme over the past decade. It replaces many of the original primary facilities that date back to 1980, when we first moved to our current site. It will ensure that The British School remains at the forefront of British education, providing a world-class education at the heart of Abu Dhabi.
It is a huge and ambitious project. It is not simply an extension to the Primary School, but is a 10,000 square metre brand new, state-of-the-art school which will integrate with the rest of the campus and bring enormous benefits to the whole school.
The Phase 4 building includes:
- a new entrance hall and reception for the primary school
- 18 new primary classrooms, with spacious Year Group areas
- two primary sports halls
- three ICT suites and a multi-media room
- primary science lab and science garden
- food technology lab
- specialist subject classrooms, including teaching facilities for Arabic and Islamic Studies
- specialist learning support rooms
- a music block, including twelve instrumental teaching rooms
- two-storey primary library
- drama studio
- two indoor swimming pools
- increased outside sports space and pitches
- a nursing department
The companies involved in the project were appointed through a tender process. The UK/UAE joint venture Wates Al Fara’a is the construction company; Turner & Townsend is the project manager; and Mott MacDonald is responsible for the design and site supervision.
The British School is funding the project through a loan. The cost of construction will be spread over the next 20 years or more and the cost borne by parents of the future whose children will be using the building. Through the structuring of the funding, the school does not foresee significant fee increases arising from the project.
“The British School Al Khubairat is at the heart of the British and wider community in Abu Dhabi, and has made a major contribution to the provision of top quality education here for the past 40 years,” said Paul Coackley, Principal of The British School. “Maintaining excellence, however, requires investment. The Phase 4 development will enable the school to continue to provide excellence in education for all our children, and marks the next stage in the school’s life.”
