Responsibility for the governance of the school is devolved to a Board of Governors, which operates under the guidelines of the school's constitution. The constitution was last amended in 1986.

The body of the Board is composed of twelve individuals. The British Ambassador or his representative, seven persons resident in Abu Dhabi who have children attending the school and four persons resident in Abu Dhabi who are nominated by His Excellency the British Ambassador in Abu Dhabi. Each governor serves a term that ends on the date of the third Annual General Meeting after the meeting at which that person took office. All governors can be re-elected or re-nominated (whichever is appropriate) if they so wish.

The role of the Board of Governors at The British School follows the UK guidelines for governing bodies. A board's role is strategic, and has a responsibility for the broad policies, plans and procedures within which the school operates. These are developed in partnership with the Principal and the Heads of School and it is their role to implement these policies.

The senior management team is responsible for the day-to-day management of the school and the delivery of the curriculum.

In the interests of effective management, any concerns or questions relating to these areas of responsibility should initially be referred to the relevant class teacher, subject teachers, Year Heads, Heads of School or, where considered necessary, to the Principal. It would not be appropriate for operational matters to be dealt with by the Board unless they have been discussed with the school's management first. If there are any unresolved issues they should be made in writing so that the board can give them full consideration. Please direct any correspondence to the Clerk to the Board.

Letters can be left at the school reception, or email to the Clerk of the Board.
