Raising money for good causes forms a very important part of life at The British School Al Khubairat. Each year children through out the school are involved in wide range of fundraising activities to support both local and international charities.

Each year the school has a number of selected charities, for which a whole host of fundraising events and activities are held throughout the year. For example, during 2007/2008 the Primary School’s chosen charity was the United Nations’ World Food Programme. In November 2008, the school presented the charity with a cheque for Dhs190,000 – the fantastic result of the children’s hard work over the past year. During 2008/2009 the primary school children raised nearly Dhs130,000 for international charity WaterAid. And in 2009/2010 the Primary School’s charity is Unicef. In 2009/2010 the primary school children raised an amazing Dhs153,600 for Unicef, and the focus charity for 2010/11 is Sightsavers.

The Sixth Form also has a number of charities they support during the year. During 2008/2009 they held numerous fundraising events to support cancer charities, including a ‘wear it pink’ day on Breast Cancer Awareness Day, and a moustache-growing competition among staff for ‘Movember’ – a month-long event in November to raise awareness of men’s health issues. They raised in excess of £3,000 (Dhs18,190) last year which went to Cancer Research, Macmillan and Breast Cancer Awareness.

The Sixth Form Committee also runs an annual Christmas Gift Box campaign, where present boxes are prepared by our students and have been sent out, in recent years, to children in Mauritius and South Africa in time for Christmas day.

The school has an ongoing relationship with The Future Centre, a special needs school in Abu Dhabi. For several years, British School sixth form students have done voluntary work at the school, helping Future Centre staff and working with the students. The British School also hosts the Future Centre’s annual sports day in our grounds, and many sixth form and Year 11 students help out on the day. We also hold other events with The Future Centre, such as the Year 6 fashion show, where British School and Future Centre students model the latest fashions, and raise money for The Future Centre and The British School nominated charity.

The school is a supporter of the Emirates Foundation’s Takatof programme, which encourages young people in the UAE to participate in voluntary work. In September 2008 The British School donated Dhs107,000 to this programme from the proceeds of the school’s 40th anniversary fundraising dinner.

Other annual charity events include Harvest Festival, where monetary and food donations are collected and delivered to the Red Crescent Society for distribution to needy families throughout the UAE; as well as the Poppy Appeal in November, the proceeds of which go towards the welfare and benevolent needs of the ex-service community and their dependents.
